What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment or endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure performed by a dentist or endodontist (a dentist who specializes in treating the interior of teeth). It is used to treat dental issues that involve the pulp of a tooth, which is the innermost part of a tooth containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.
Root canal treatment can be highly effective in saving a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. It alleviates pain, removes infection, and allows the tooth to continue functioning in the mouth. With proper care and maintenance, a tooth that has undergone a successful root canal can last a lifetime.
WHEN?
LETS DIVE IN...
Root canal treatment is typically recommended when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected, inflamed, or damaged due to various reasons, including:
- Deep cavities: When a cavity (tooth decay) progresses to the point where it reaches the pulp, it can lead to infection and pain.
- Tooth trauma: A blow to the tooth or other types of dental injuries can damage the pulp.
- Cracks or fractures: If a tooth has a crack or fracture that extends into the pulp, it can become infected.
The goal of a root canal procedure is to remove the infected or damaged pulp tissue, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth's root canals, and then seal the space to prevent further infection. Here's an overview of the steps involved in a root canal treatment:
1. Anesthesia: The dentist will administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth, ensuring that you don't feel pain during the procedure.
2. Access: The dentist will create a small opening in the crown (top) of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
3. Removal: The infected or damaged pulp tissue is carefully removed from the tooth's interior using specialized instruments.
4. Cleaning and shaping: The interior of the root canals is cleaned, disinfected, and shaped to prepare them for the filling material.
5. Filling: The cleaned and disinfected root canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal the space and prevent future infection.
6. Restoration: After the root canal, a temporary or permanent filling is placed in the access opening created at the beginning of the procedure. In many cases, a dental crown is also recommended to strengthen and protect the tooth, especially if it has been significantly
infected.
